Turiscai is a community of 6000 people in a mountainous area 5 hours (200km) from Dili. The main village is accessible by 4 wheel drive but beyond that the outlying villages can only be reached using horses.

The surrounding area includes 13 remote villages with simple dwellings of mud and bamboo. The community has no power, water or health facilities.

Turiscai relies on dry land agriculture to support itself. This year the drought has made that even more difficult. Coffee is the main crop but profit from its sales are small as the prices are low on the world market. Lack of clean water and poor diet leads to a number of problems.
