Svey Riang

Svey Riang district of Cambodia “It has passed 3pm and I’m swinging in a hammock under the shade of a mango tree. We arrived at the tin and mud home of relatives of the step father of Sophat. That was a mouthful. A chicken had been freshly killed and cooked for a feast of a lunch they could ill afford.

This is real countryside and they own a hectare or so of land only under rice cultivation during the wet season. We ate at a roughly made wooden table under this same mango tree, with a packed dirt floor beneath us. Their generosity is amazing and they have graciously accepted the offer of money in return for this reception.. Many people live in this hut and the small house across the road and life is financed by one bother of Sokha employed as a policeman and another who owns a car workshop.

Despite the poverty it is peaceful here and the children run about amongst the couple of chickens and ducks or join the adults in the many hammocks slung everywhere.”
