Joypurhat

Joypurhat Sadar Upazila (joypurhat district) with an area of 238.54 sq km, is bounded by panchbibi upazila on the north, khetlal, akkelpur and badalgachhi upazilas on the south, kalai and Khetlal upazilas on the east, damurhuda upazila and West Bengal (India) on the west. Main rivers are little jamuna, Tulsi Ganga, Chhiri and Harbati.

Joypurhat (Town) consists of 9 wards and 48 mahallas. The area of the town is 18.53 km. The town has a population of 56323; male 51.60%, female 48.40%. Literacy rate among the town people is 51.4%. It has a circuit house and a dakbungalow.

Administration Joypurhat thana, now an upazila, was established in 1918. It consists of one municipality, 8 union parishads, 9 wards, 198 mouzas and 192 villages.

Historical events During the War of Liberation, on 26 April 1971, the Pakistani army in collaboration with their local agents (Razakars, Al-Badar) brutally killed 371 persons of village Barai-Kadirpur (predominantly Hindu inhabitants) of Bamba union.
